PRIVASEE® Smart Film is the category name for every PDLC active film our UAE factory produces — supplied as a 50 m roll for retrofit-onto-existing-glass installations and as lamination-ready input for partner glass laminators building their own switchable units. One reference active-film family, FM-T91, with thinner and tinted variants engineered for specific project briefs.
PRIVASEE® manufactures the Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) active film in our UAE factory. Switching happens at the molecular level — liquid crystals re-orient when an electric field is applied, taking the panel from privacy state to transparent in under one second. The active PDLC layer sits between two transparent ITO conductive coatings, protected top and bottom by PET carrier films. The same finished film is used two ways: bonded directly to existing glass via a pressure-sensitive adhesive back face (retrofit applications), or supplied with a release liner for partner laminators to encapsulate inside their own laminated glass units. The PDLC science is the same; the back-face treatment is what changes.
With no power applied, the polymer-dispersed liquid crystals sit in random orientation. Light scatters as it passes through the film — the panel reads opaque to the eye while remaining bright.
When power is applied, the liquid crystals align with the electric field. Light passes through unscattered and the panel becomes optically clear in under one second. Cut power and it returns to its private state.
An AC signal between the two ITO electrodes cycles the liquid crystals back and forth — opaque to clear and back, in under one second each way. No moving parts. No consumables. No degradation under normal operation. Indoor commercial service life 7–10 years.
The five-layer active stack inside Smart Film is identical across every variant in the range — Hard-coat PET, ITO electrode, PDLC active film FM-T91, ITO electrode, PET carrier. The only thing that changes at the factory is the back face. The self-adhesive (-A) variant ships with a pressure-sensitive adhesive bonded to the PET carrier, ready to apply to existing interior glass. The non-adhesive (-N) variant ships with a release liner in place of the adhesive, ready for partner laminators to peel and encapsulate inside their own laminated glass units. Side-by-side below — the active film and switching performance are the same; the downstream path is what differs.
PRIVASEE® manufactures the Smart Film family in our UAE factory. The full range is listed below — clear FM-T91 in two thicknesses, tinted FM grades for solar-attenuation and design-led briefs, and the engineered large-panel path for projects where the standard grade is not the right fit. Every variant ships in a 50 m roll as standard, with custom lengths available on request. Pick by spec, or send us the brief and our engineering team routes the right grade for you.
The reference active film — transparent on power, opaque off power. Sub-1-second switching. Supplied as 50 m rolls in custom widths. The SKU code carries everything you need to specify: the number is the active-film thickness in microns, the suffix is the back-face line (A = self-adhesive, N = release-liner for partner lamination).
Same FM-T91 active film, factory-applied tint. Powered on: light tint visible (translucent through the tint). Powered off: fully opaque in the tint colour. All three are 16 µm self-adhesive — the SKU number is the on-state transmission grade (T60 = 60% range, T40 = 40% range, T16 = 16% range), and the suffix is the colour.
Where the standard SKUs are not the right fit. Send us the brief — panel schedule, site context, finish requirements — and engineering routes the right film grade, format, finish, and Power Drive family for the project. Used when the brief asks for non-standard panel runs, branded or patterned print, asymmetric build paths, or non-standard front-face finishes.
Every clear and tinted SKU pairs with a PRIVASEE® Power Drive. Drive selection is routed per project — see §07 Power Drive pairing below or the full catalogue on the Order page.
PRIVASEE® Smart Film is specified across four core audience tracks. Each works with a slightly different version of our package — architects pull spec language and standards documentation, contractors pull install procedure and warranty terms, laminator partners pull the release-liner film and the partner-certified lamination procedure, and retrofit installers pull the field-grade install manual. Every audience pulls from the same factory output.
Writing the project specification. Need drop-in spec language, datasheets, compliance information, and architect-grade visual references for the tender package.
Installing partition glass into commercial fit-outs and villas. Need cut-to-size film delivery, install manual, edge-seal procedure, and Power Drive wiring on the same job sheet.
Glass laminators building their own switchable units. Need release-liner film, partner-certified lamination procedure, technical support, and distributor tier pricing.
Specialist film installers retrofitting existing glass on operational sites. Need same-day install workflow, surface-prep guidance, and reversibility documentation.
Smart Film is built around six configuration axes. Width, roll length, tint, printed graphic, edge treatment, and Power Drive pairing. PRIVASEE® engineering confirms each one against your existing glass schedule before any roll cuts. Send us the brief and we'll come back with the engineered specification.
Maximum width confirmed per project · panel schedule required.
Order short-run for tenant fit-outs · order jumbo for continuous facade-side glazing.
Tint affects on-state appearance · independent of switching performance.
Print files required at quote stage · minimum order applies for printed runs.
Other silicones void warranty.
PRIVASEE drives are universal — they pair with PRIVASEE film and third-party PDLC.
PRIVASEE® Smart Film is supplied with the technical file required to specify it into a project. Optical, electrical, and material-safety information is documented in the FM-T91 datasheet family. Where Smart Film is paired with existing safety glass for life-safety locations, the underlying glass remains under its own standards — Smart Film does not alter the structural performance of the host glass.
Visible Light Transmission and solar properties methodology applied to the laminated film in clear and opaque states.
Standard haze method for clear-state optical clarity and opaque-state diffusion characterization.
Substance declarations are supplied for procurement and ESG compliance on EU + UK projects.
Technical file with compliance information is supplied on a per-project basis to support architect specification packages.
Power Drive enclosure ratings are documented per family in the Power Drive Catalogue and per-family manuals.
Roll format (LP-001) and approved sealant (LP-003) are referenced verbatim across the technical file. (LP-002 covers EVA lamination grade — applicable to PRIVASEE® Smart Glass only, not Smart Film.)
PRIVASEE® Power Drives are universal — they pair with PRIVASEE Smart Film, PRIVASEE Smart Glass, and third-party PDLC products. Six drive families cover wired switching, RF remote, fine dimming, multi-zone control, motion-triggered, and vehicle / marine adapters. Power drive and controller configuration is confirmed per project specification.
| Scenario | Recommended drive | Why it fits |

| Vehicle · marine · 12 / 24 V DC | CZ | Vehicle and marine adapter for DC-supplied retrofit installations. |
| Premium · enclosure-rated wall-mount | PJ-C | Compact constant-voltage drive for wall-cavity or premium architectural installations. |
Drive selection is confirmed against the project's switching scenario, control method, and panel count. The full Power Drive Catalogue and six per-family manuals live in the Technical Library and on the Order page.
Smart Film warranty is conditional on approved materials. The only approved edge sealant is TOSSEAL 381 (LP-003). The only approved cleaner is Isopropyl Alcohol 70% on a lint-free microfibre — never sprayed directly on the surface. Use of any other product void warranty.
Tested for compatibility with PRIVASEE® Smart Film edge treatment. Bonds to the hard-coat PET face and the existing glass without attacking the PSA adhesive layer or the PDLC active film. Use is mandatory wherever the film terminates at a frame, panel edge, or transition point.
Applied to a lint-free microfibre cloth and wiped without pressure — never sprayed directly on the surface. Smart Film is typically easier to clean than Smart Glass because the room-side protective laminate is hard-coated. Ammonia, acidic, alkaline, solvent, and abrasive cleaners void warranty.
Smart Film carries a 24-month manufacturer warranty from dispatch on the film composite. Coverage is conditional on approved sealant, approved cleaner, and approved installation procedure.
Power Drives and accessories carry a 12-month manufacturer warranty from dispatch. Indoor commercial service life expectation for the film is 7–10 years subject to approved-materials and approved-installation use.
Smart Film is specified on hundreds of fit-outs every year. We supply two parallel resource tracks — one for the architect writing the specification, one for the project engineer wiring it. Both pull from the same locked technical file in our Technical Library.
